I've even had pickups, that didn't sound good in a heavy guitar, sound great in a light guitar, that was a similar model. Every guitar is a sum of the parts. It works on some polyurethane as well. When it is the variety it works on, they tend to glow a milky white/blue rather than the bright yellow lacquer tends to be.

Some seemingly identical guitars sound better than others simply because they're different guitars. IMO, the actual weight has very little, if anything, to do with tone.
