ONLY paid, extended, AppleCare+ warranty plan covers user damages, like a cracked screen. If you didn't purchase extended AppleCare+ for that iPad, be prepared to pay a high cost for repair/device replacement.

There isn't a right answer to answer to this as it's down to your own personal Risk Appetite. What I would say though if you're thinking of getting AppleCare just for a replacement battery, I wouldn't bother.
