Celsio is Norway’s largest supplier of district heating and plays a key role in Oslo’s circular energy system. We use excess heat from waste incineration, Oslo’s sewage and data centres to produce renewable district heating for Oslo’s residents and businesses.

Hafslund Celsio (earlier Hafslund Oslo Celsio) plans to capture up to 400 000 tonnes of CO2 from their waste-to-energy in Oslo. Construction phase of Hafslund Celsio was entered in summer 2022, but set on hold spring 2023 after increased cost estimates.

Hafslund Celsio is Norway’s largest district heating supplier and the owner and operator of Norway’s largest waste-to-energy plant. This project is part of Longship, the Norwegian Government’s full value-chain carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative.

Hafslund Oslo Celsio’s waste incineration plant at Klemetsrud is Oslo’s largest emission point and produces a significant proportion of the city’s total CO₂ emissions. Without carbon capture at the plant, it will not be possible for the City of Oslo to achieve its ambitious climate targets.

Jan 27, 2025 · Aker Solutions and SLB Capturi have been awarded a contract for the carbon capture and storage solution at Hafslund Celsio’s waste-to-energy plant in Oslo, Norway. The contract will deliver a carbon capture plant, a liquefaction system, temporary storage, and loading facility at the waste incineration site.

Hafslund Oslo Celsio is developing the world’s first full-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project for waste-to-energy. When realized, it will be a state-of-the-art facility providing carbon negative end-treatment of residual waste.
