California Gov. Gavin Newsom is entrenched in the role of No. 1 adversary to President Trump, but his path to that role baffled his supporters and gave ammunition to his critics.

Newsom announced Friday that he filed a defamation lawsuit against Fox News, seeking $787 million over host Jesse Watters’ claim that Newsom lied about his phone calls with President Donald Trump earlier this month. According to Politico, Newsom alleged that Watters’ program “misleadingly edited a video of Trump to support the claim.”
