The Games opened on Jan. 25, with a parade of competing nations. The next day, U.S. skater Charles Jewtraw claimed the first ever Winter Olympic gold medal, winning the 500-meter speed skating event. Finland’s Clas Thunberg won five speed skating medals, including three on Jan. 27.

Sadly, also in 2019 Isabeau’s father Tim died. His obituary read: "Tim was a devoted father whose only daughter, Isabeau, meant everything to him. He was so proud to be her father, she was the joy of his life. He was a lovable, outgoing and friendly person who will be missed by all who knew him.”

Dick Button, the legendary figure skater who became the first American to win Olympic gold in the sport, died Thursday at age 95, according to U.S. Figure Skating. In 1948, Button, then 18, won the first of back-to-back Olympic titles.
