The U.S. Forest Service is firing around 3,400 recent hires while the National Park Service is terminating about 1,000 under President Donald Trump's push to cut federal spending, people familiar with the plans said on Friday.

The U.S. Forest Service will fire roughly 3,400 federal employees across every level of the agency beginning Thursday, according to two people familiar with the plans. The move targets employees who are still within their probationary period, which means it’s easier for them to be let go.

The two decisions underscore the confusing — and at times contradictory — nature of the new administration’s efforts to shrink the federal workforce.
