Snowfall totals from an overnight storm varied across the Charlotte region on Wednesday, a National Weather Service meteorologist said. Union County near Monroe saw the highest amount at 6/10ths of an inch, NWS meteorologist Rodney Hinson told The Charlotte Observer.

The top weather story remains the extreme cold dominating Charlotte. Meanwhile, significant snow and ice are moving up the Carolina coast, and several inches are expected to fall. While we may see some flurries in the Charlotte Metro, it will not add up too much.

A chance for snow is coming across the Carolinas this week, but it is unlikely that Charlotte will see much based on the weather system’s current track. Temperatures around the Queen City will certainly be cold enough for snow.

CHARLOTTE — Friday’s winter storm may have seemed like a letdown in Charlotte where less than an inch of snow fell while other areas got more. There were several reasons why snow totals didn’t pan out as much as we expected, Meteorologist Joe Puma said. They were the presence of dry air and a change in the temperature profile.

At least 8 inches fell in New Orleans, where no snow had accumulated since 2009. (It broke a previous record of 2.7 inches, according to the NWS .) It was also the largest winter storm to hit Jacksonville in 35 years and the biggest for Houston since 1960.

The largest snowfall accumulations didn't fall in the mountains. Instead, it fell along the beaches of North Carolina's Outer Banks.
