Airbnb's CEO is spending hundreds of millions to relaunch his travel company as an all-purpose service app. Fitness! Food! Microdermabrasion? A WIRED exclusive.
Brian Chesky is hoping to take the company to new heights with a major rebrand. “Basically,” he says, “it’s the Airbnb of anything.”
The vacation rental platform is redesigning its app and expanding its offerings with the launch of Airbnb Services and Airbnb Experiences, letting users go beyond booking a room or home stay and choose from a variety of amenities, similar to what hotel chains and cruises offer to guests.
Mr. Chesky said that the new product is still uniquely “Airbnb.” “We are finding the most interesting people in the world and designing new experiences,” he said, citing the Notre-Dame tour as an example of using an expert outside of the travel industry to offer a unique lens.
Airbnb has rolled out an extensive new effort to make services from professional chefs, local tour guides, celebrities and others available through its platform.
The people behind Airbnb's Services and Experiences are carefully vetted, Coplan and Chesky attested. "Services hosts have an average of 10 years of experience, have completed Airbnb’s identity verification process, and are required to submit relevant licenses and certifications," according to a press release.
