A group of authors, including Sarah Silverman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, have lost their lawsuit against Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta. The writers sued the tech company over their copyrighted works being used to train Meta’s artificial intelligence large language models (LLMs) without permission.

Meta just won a major ruling in a landmark case about how copyright law and fair use applies to AI model training, the second such loss for authors this week. Just days ago, Anthropic won a fair use case as well.

A US judge on Wednesday handed Meta a victory over authors who accused the tech giant of violating copyright law by training Llama artificial intelligence on their creations without permission.

“The Court has no choice but to grant summary judgment to Meta on the plaintiffs’ claim that the company violated copyright law by training its models with their books,” wrote US District Court judge Vince Chhabria. He concluded that the plaintiffs did not present sufficient evidence that Meta’s use of their books was harmful.

The federal judge who ruled in Meta’s favor still isn’t convinced its use of copyrighted materials for AI training qualifies as fair use.
