Trump has argued that the Arctic island is critical for U.S. security given threats posed by Russia as well as China.

Negotiators have discussed proposals to check Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic and transfer sovereignty over pockets of Greenlandic land to the United States, an idea opposed by Denmark.

It’s been a long-standing Kremlin strategy to drive a permanent wedge between the United States and Europe, dividing and weakening its traditional adversaries in the West.

CNN reports that Russia is expanding its influence in the Arctic amid Donald Trump’s plans regarding Greenland.

Russia’s Foreign Minister said Trump’s actions upended the Western concept of the “rule-based global order” that Russia has long criticized.

"What happens in Greenland is of no concern to us whatsoever," Russian President Vladimir Putin said

Putin has long sought to undermine the western alliance that he sees as a threat.

The Americans have the Pituffik Space Base (pronounced Bee-doo-FEEK) in northwestern Greenland. Its 150 personnel run missile defense and space surveillance. Its location at the top of the globe, not far from the North Pole, allows its radar to detect missiles in their earliest moments of flight.
