After a wild schedule of road games and cross-country flights, the Edmonton Oilers kicked off their six-game home stand against Alex Ovechkin and the red-hot Washington Capitals.

A battle between two of the NHL’s best teams Tuesday night took a bizarre turn when the Edmonton Oilers benefitted from a fan throwing their cheesy nachos onto the ice, scoring a goal on distracted Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson,

Capitals goalie Logan Thompson said he was distracted by a tray of cheese-covered nachos thrown on the ice while Oilers winger Corey Perry scored on him in Edmonton on Tuesday night.

Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson picked up his 22nd win of the season on Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers.

Thompson is set to start in Tuesday's road matchup against the Oilers, per Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.

In a game where the Capitals struggled to get much going offensively, it was Thompson who helped hold down the fort. The Capitals' stars also stayed hot, with Pierre-Luc Dubois putting up another multi-point outing to help power D.C.'s offense and Tom Wilson striking again.

A tray of cheesy nachos flew from the stands and onto the ice, distracting Logan Thompson from stopping a shot during a narrow victory over the Edmonton Oilers, the Washington Capitals goalie said.

“Hopefully he doesn’t start something and we can keep the ice clean,” Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch said, possibly envisioning a new take on barrages such as the Rat Trick of the Florida Panthers in the mid-90s, or the Detroit Red Wings’ Legend of the Octopus.

The Edmonton Oilers welcomed the NHL’s best, Washington Capitals, to Rogers Place for a Tuesday night tilt (Jan. 21). The Oilers were the better team in this one, but lost 3-2 thanks to another stellar performance from Logan Thompson in the Capitals’ net.
