Containment of the Eaton Fire has risen to 45% despite tough conditions that were expected to worsen. Meanwhile, the death toll attributed to the fire has also grown to 17, according to the L.A. County medical examiner.

Nine of the fire victims died in the Palisades fire and 16 in the Eaton fire in Altadena, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner and Sheriff Robert Luna.

Firefighters continue to battle two major wildfires in the Los Angeles area.

Eaton Fire initially started 6:18 p.m. Jan. 7 in Los Angeles County. Since its discovery a week ago, it has burned 14,117 acres. A fire crew of 3,392 has been working on site and, as of Tuesday evening, they managed to contain 35% of the fire. However, investigations into the cause are ongoing.

"We are not out of the woods yet. Please stay on guard for a fast-moving fire," the weather service's Los Angeles office warned.

Fire crews worked quickly to extinguish a new wildfire that erupted near Hansen Canyon Dam in the northeast San Fernando Valley Tuesday evening. Sky5 aerial footage showed the fire burning near an apartment complex along Foothill Boulevard.

Attorneys representing those affected by the Eaton Fire filed a lawsuit against Southern California Edison alleging that the company's equipment sparked the disastrous blaze in Altadena.
