When Macdonald says “in the trilogy,” he’s not referring to 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, and 28 Years Later. If you hadn’t heard, 28 Years Later kicks off a brand-new trilogy. The second film, 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, has already completed production and will be released in 2026.

Cillian Murphy, who starred in the lead role in the original 2002 film 28 Days Later, won't be returning for the upcoming sequel, 28 Years Later. Producer Andrew Macdonald confirmed this in a recent interview with Empire.

He might have some other sort of association with the franchise but Murphy is not in for the acting this time.
