Chicago winter weather: Lake-effect snow diminishes
Digest more
A quiet, dry day is in store for the Chicago area Thursday, but things will start to change overnight as lake effect snow begins to build in western Michigan, leading to a “prolonged” period of snow for northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana Friday and Saturday.
Friday was another chilly day across the Chicago area with highs well below normal, peaking in the upper teens officially at O’Hare but reaching the low 20s at Midway and the Lakefront.
The National Weather Service’s monthly roundup of records from O'Hare Airport shows January’s average temperature of 21.9 degrees was just 3.3 degrees below the historic average for the month.
Forecasters are anticipating two rounds of lake effect snow to dump anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow on portions of northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana, between Friday morning and Saturday evening.
Illinois was hit with snow squalls Wednesday, bringing strong gusts and quick periods of accumulation. Here's how much more snow we're supposed to get.
