Marine biologists off of Baja California recorded one orca teeing up another to smash a sunfish into pieces. Scientists say there could be a reason for this behavior — or it could be just for entertainment.

Scientists have documented a previously unrecorded orca hunting technique, dubbed "ram-to-fragment," in which killer whales work together to blast giant sunfish apart with explosive force.

After the impact, a juvenile orca is seen eating some of the smaller pieces of the fish, while the adults eat from the remaining carcass. According to the study, a similar "ram-to-fragment" behavior was recorded in 2025, raising questions about how often the orcas engage in this kind of activity and its purpose.
