John H. Sununu, Bush’s chief of staff, assured Republicans that the pick would be a “home run for conservatives” who were on the brink of a significant remaking of the court.

Sununu is the son of former Gov. John H. Sununu, who was chief of staff to the former President Bush. Smith was the first elected senator in a decade to be unseated in a primary.
