The SS United States has been cleared to sail from south Philadelphia to Mobile, Ala., in preparation for its eventual sinking in northwest Florida to become the world's largest artificial reef.

Plans call for the ship to be moved to an adjacent pier around 6 a.m. Thursday where it will remain until about 4 a.m. Saturday, when it will be towed down the Delaware River and underneath the Walt Whitman Bridge. The SS United States will also pass under the Commodore Barry and Delaware Memorial bridges.

Traffic on the Walt Whitman Bridge is expected to stop between 4-4:30 a.m., officials said. The ship is expected to reach the Commodore Barry Bridge five hours later, when traffic will stop there between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., officials said.

The ship is scheduled to begin its move to Okaloosa County, Florida, on Thursday and depart Philadelphia on Saturday morning.
