CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam will resign on the same day as the SEC’s Gary Gensler. Behnam’s departure paves the way for a pro-crypto CFTC chief

Rostin Behnam, Chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), will step down from his position on Jan 20 after a four-year term.

In December 2023, the SEC denied a rulemaking petition by Coinbase. According to SEC Chair Gary Gensler, “existing laws and regulations apply to the crypto securities markets.” However, SEC Commissioners Hester Peirce and Mark Uyeda said they “disagree with the Commission’s decision.”

After more than seven years at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, I will be stepping down from my position as Chairman on January 20th. My final day at the Commission will be Friday, February 7th.
