A 41-year-old chartered accountant from Pune has become the first confirmed casualty of the Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in the city, with cases rising to 111 in just under three weeks. The Maharashtra health department has involved experts from Delhi and Bengaluru to assess the situation and guide public health measures.

The Pune civic body has set up a special ward in the municipality-run Kamala Nehru hospital to provide treatment to affected patients.

A Pune-based patient has died after contracting Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), making it the first suspected death in Maharashtra due to the disease. He passed away in Maharashtra’s Solapur district, where he was visiting his native village for personal work. Meanwhile, the over 100 cases of GBS have now been recorded in Pune.

The Pune district in Maharashtra has reported 64 cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, with 13 patients on ventilators. Pune Municipal Corporation is providing free treatment for affected individuals, urging residents to boil water for safety.

As many as 81 patients are from areas coming under the Pune Municipal Corporation, 14 from areas under the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and the remaining 6 from other districts.
