The collapse on Friday of a sixth round of U.N. talks aimed at curbing plastic output has dimmed hopes of tackling a key source of pollution and left many advocates of restrictions pessimistic about a global deal during the Trump administration.
Nations are crafting the first global, legally binding treaty on plastics pollution. People are getting creative to put the pressure on to get a deal done at the meeting at the United Nations office in Geneva.
Multiple meetings are continuing at the second part of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, which aims to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. The session will run until 14 August.
