As Kiffin prepared to make his exit from Ole Miss, several Rebels fans gathered outside the gates at Oxford-University Airport. When the coach emerged from a vehicle and walked toward a waiting plane, those fans began to boo and deliver obscene gestures (they were not signaling that Kiffin was “No. 1”).

On Sunday, Ole Miss announced that defensive coordinator Pete Golding was promoted to head coach in the wake of Lane Kiffin leaving the Rebels for LSU. Golding, who has been an assistant on eight different staffs in the past 20 years, has never spent a day as a head coach.
