The former NBA MVP helped UCLA to back-to-back appearances in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament in the two years he played for the famed program, teaming up with fellow future NBA players Kevin Love, Darren Collison, Arron Afflalo and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.
It was a hard-fought battle that included a bloody nose, back-and-forth scoring and wrestling matches for 50-50 balls. But in the end, UCLA showed why the Bruins have owned the No. 1 national ranking for most of the season as they held off the Tigers to win 72-65 and earn the program’s first NCAA Final Four berth.
South Carolina kept its repeat championship hopes alive and reached its fifth straight Final Four with a grinding 54-50 win over Duke on Sunday. The Gamecocks will face the winner between top-seeded Texas and TCU on Monday in their bid to become the first repeat NCAA champion since UConn’s run of four straight from 2013-16.
