World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen quit the World Rapid Chess Championship on Friday after he refused to change out of the jeans he was wearing, according to the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

World chess champion Magnus Carlsen dropped out of the World Rapid and Blitz Championships on Dec. 27 because he refused to change out of his jeans in accordance with the International Chess Federation's event dress code.

Facing a public relations checkmate, the International Chess Federation surrendered and allowed world champ Magnus Carlsen to wear jeans Monday at the World Blitz Championship in New York City.

World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen played his first match at the World Blitz Championship after initially quitting the chess tournament due to a dress code dispute with organizers.
