Visiting Potsdam Sunday in mid-May, intending to buy tickets online for the Palace, to get the timed entrance we want. Also want to visit the New Palace, but it appears you have to be there to get a time to enter that day--no reservations in advance. Is that true, and if so, are the queues long for the New Palace?

In my experience if you have purchased advance admission tickets you get to go in within that day but yes it depends on how you have booked a reservation which I believe the time slot can be included in the booking. There are busloads of tourists arriving and groups in batches are made to enter the castle like every 15-30 minutes interval (I'm not so sure of the spacing) but we waited more or less about 20 minutes before it was our turn (and yet there were still many groups behind us). If your group is early then you may just be one of the first in line but if you're one of the later time groups then you may have to wait a little longer if the line has accumulated. Its best if your group arrive on the scheduled entry time slot because if you're late you will be placed at the back of the queue.
