We had 2 7 year olds and a 4 year old and they loved it. I think even a 12 year old would have fun in the Swamp room and there is a craft room we didn't get it that might appeal to your 12 year old. Also the pulley and weight apparatus would be fine all ages. I agree that you shouldn't miss the aquarium. The Insectarium is also outstanding as is the Audubon Zoo and you can take the steamship Natchez to the Zoo or ride the Streetcar for added fun.
