I am only familiar with RetroArch, which I know as a multi-platform emulator and frontend, although I am still learning about this stuff. From what I understand, the rest of them (i.e., Batocera, Recalbox, RetroPie) are actually OS'es, rather than mere emulators/frontends, designed specifically for retro gaming.
Content Downloader in RetroArch Did you know that you can download ROMs with RetroArch itself? The list provides in example demos, prototypes, homebrew and some other stuff for free. Just run RetroArch, open the Main Menu, go to Online Update > Content Downloader and select a system and look what is available for you. Have a look at these:

I'm so used to seeing "what's the best, safest place to download roms", I had to double-check what sub this was in my feed. Excellent job! My setups are now curated, too. I actually referenced an old favorite site of mine, RacketBoy, for their system "defined" and "hidden gems" list.
However, I have to manually select ‘download thumbnails’ for each title. Is there a way to set retroarch to automatically do this every time I add a new game?

I've had internet issues recently that often reduces my download speed to single digit KiB/s or, currently, bytes. For cores like Mednafen PSX HW, the download seems to time out at around 6-10% without recovery.
Yes, Retroarch is safe. And if you don't believe me, you can inspect every bit of the source code for yourself, and even build it yourself if you're suspicious enough.
